eBook – The Garden of Life: A Story About the Facts of Life – Chapter 2
As Luka walked away from Maris’ garden, her words echoed in his mind. The facts of life seemed so simple when laid out in the garden, but as he walked through the village, he wondered how they applied to his own life. He had seen many things growing up—his family’s struggles, the changing seasons of friendships, and even the passing of loved ones. Yet, there was something comforting in knowing that everything was connected, part of a larger cycle.
The sun began to set, casting long shadows across the village. Luka’s feet carried him to the hill just beyond the village, where he often sat when he needed to think. The wind rustled the grass around him, and as he gazed at the golden horizon, he felt a deep sense of peace.
He thought about the first fact: The Seed of Beginnings. Luka had always dreamed of becoming a craftsman, just like his father. His father had passed down many skills to him, but Luka had never quite believed in his own abilities. Now, reflecting on Maris’ words, he realized that his journey, too, began as a small seed. He didn’t need to be a master craftsman right away. Like the seedlings in Maris’ garden, his potential was there, waiting to grow.
As he sat there, the second fact, Growth and Struggle, settled into his heart. He remembered the times he had struggled to perfect a carving or felt frustration when something didn’t turn out as planned. Maris was right—growth wasn’t easy. But now, instead of seeing those moments as failures, Luka could see them as the knots on the vine that helped him climb higher. Without the struggle, there could be no progress.
His thoughts drifted to his friendships. Recently, his best friend Milo had moved away, and Luka had felt lost without him. The third fact, The Seasons of Life, reminded him that friendships, like everything else, went through changes. It was hard to let go, but Maris had shown him that the roots—his core—would remain. Just as trees shed their leaves in autumn only to bloom again in spring, so too would Luka find new connections and paths to walk.
Luka lay back on the grass, looking up at the sky. The stars were starting to emerge, blinking into existence one by one. He thought about the fourth fact, Interconnectedness, and how every part of the garden relied on another. Life, he realized, wasn’t just about his own journey. His actions—whether small or large—rippled out to touch the lives of others, just as Milo’s friendship had shaped who he was. It reminded him to be mindful of how he treated others, knowing that even small acts of kindness could make a difference.
And then, Luka thought of his grandfather, who had passed away just last year. He had struggled with grief, not understanding why someone so important to him had to leave. But now, with the fifth fact, The Cycle of Life, in his heart, Luka saw it differently. His grandfather had passed on, but not without leaving behind a legacy—his wisdom, his love, and the stories he had shared. Those memories nourished Luka, like compost feeding new growth in the garden. His grandfather was still with him, in a way, shaping his path forward.
As Luka gazed at the stars, he felt a deep sense of purpose blooming within him. Maris’ garden had given him more than just facts—it had given him a way to understand his own life, his place in the world, and how to move forward with both courage and grace.
The next morning, Luka returned to his family’s workshop. He picked up the tools his father had passed down to him and began working on a new project—a carving of a vine with roots deep and strong, twisting upward toward the sun. With every cut and every detail, Luka poured his newfound understanding into the wood.
Weeks passed, and slowly, the carving came to life. Villagers who passed by the workshop noticed the change in Luka—he worked with more focus, more patience, and above all, more confidence. It was as though Maris’ garden had taken root in him, and now he was growing in ways he had never imagined.
One day, as Luka stood back to admire his nearly finished piece, there was a knock at the door. It was Maris, her eyes as bright as ever.
“I see you’ve been planting seeds of your own,” she said, her voice soft and knowing.
Luka smiled. “I’ve been thinking a lot about the garden and the lessons you taught me.”
“And what have you learned?” Maris asked, stepping closer to examine his work.
Luka thought for a moment. “I’ve learned that life is always changing, always growing. But no matter what happens, as long as I take care of my roots, I’ll find my way.”
Maris nodded, her smile widening. “You’ve understood the most important fact of all, Luka.”
“What’s that?” he asked, curious.
“That life, like a garden, is a place of endless possibility. We don’t always control the seasons or the storms, but we do control how we tend to our own garden—how we nurture our dreams, how we grow through challenges, and how we connect with those around us.”
Luka’s heart swelled with pride and gratitude. He had found his path, and though it was still unfolding, he knew that he was ready for whatever lay ahead.
As Maris turned to leave, she gave one last piece of advice: “Remember, Luka, the garden of life is not just a place to learn from—it’s a place to thrive in. So plant your seeds, tend to them with care, and watch as your life blooms in ways you never thought possible.”
And with that, Luka smiled, knowing that no matter where his journey led, he would carry the garden of life with him, always.
